Reflexology is an ancient healing therapy that uses a variety of manual pressure techniques on the feet, hands, & ears, which correspond to zones and reflexes encompassing every part of the body. It is holistic, scientifically proven, non-invasive, and natural.

Anyone, regardless of age, who wants to attain and/or maintain good health, can benefit from reflexology.

Where did Reflexology originate?
Reflexology has been around for centuries. There are pictures on the walls of tombs in Egypt showing reflexology being performed. Early Asian traders most likely brought reflexology to India, where it became part of the culture, then moved eastward to China and Japan, where it was refined and adapted into their existing health practices. It also made its way into Europe and the United Kingdom, where it is an accepted holistic modality used by millions yearly. The word "reflexology" is credited to a Russian psychiatrist from Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

In the US, many Native American tribes have also applied pressure to the feet as a means of healing. Dr. William Fitzgerald is credited with developing "reflex zone therapy" dividing the body into ten zones and using zone therapy as an anesthetic for dental and surgical procedures. Dr. Joe S. Riley drew the first detailed diagrams of the reflex points on the feet and ears. Eunice Ingham, R.N. developed many of the specialized manual techniques currently used by therapists. She was also responsible for introducing reflexology as a complementary healing therapy to other health care professionals (chiropractors, naturopaths, physical therapists, etc.), as well as to the general public.

How does Reflexology work?
The hands and feet contain over 6500 nerve endings each. (This may explain why we usually feel so much better when they are relaxed and full of energy.) These nerve endings interconnect with the complete nervous system coursing through our bodies, directing information to our brain, spinal cord, and everywhere else. Over the years, reflex zones and points have been "mapped out" for the feet, hands, and ears, resulting in detailed diagrams of where each organ and system correlates to its nerve endings. As each reflex is worked, a release of energy is triggered in the corresponding organ or zone, as well as an overall relaxation response. Reflexology relaxes the entire body by engaging the parasympathetic nervous system, which is dominant during sleep, intimacy, joyous occasions, and general happiness.

Because Reflexology works from the inside and at a distance, whole systems (such as circulatory, digestive, etc.) can be easily accessed and healing can be facilitated. By responding to any swollen, tender, tight or granular areas - and always to a client's sensitivities - a reflexologist can help the body achieve homeostasis - perfect organic balance. Energic blocks are often released simultaneously to the release of tension.

Reflexology has been shown to reduce stress, increase the delivery of oxygen to the cells, relieve pain and discomfort, stimulate the digestive system and soothe tired, overworked hands & feet.

Because reflexologists do not diagnose, prescribe or treat specific illnesses, most states do not currently license reflexologists. To uphold the highest professional standards, the American Reflexology Certification Board was established, requiring a minimum of 110 hours of instruction and clinical internship from an accredited school. Professional organizations, such as The Reflexology Association of America, The International Council of Reflexologists, and state organizations (Reflexology Organization of Oregon, e.g.) help reflexology professionals stay in touch with each other, new advances and research in their field. It is important to ascertain the qualifications of any reflexologist when choosing your therapist.

What is a Reflexology session like?
A reflexology session can be 30 to 75 minutes in length, depending upon your needs. Before beginning a session, you will be asked to remove only your socks/stockings, footwear, jewelry, watches and eyeglasses. Reflexology is ideal for anyone who does not wish to disrobe - for any reason.

The initial session at Sole to Soul Reflexology will include a relaxing footbath with your choice of aromatherapy salts (using Young Living Essential Oils). During your soak, we will review the information you provided on the Intake Questionnaire and address your questions or concerns. Together, we will decide the goals for that session, and perhaps your ongoing therapy.

At the reflexology studio, your bodywork is done on a stationary, massage-type table. You will be lying on your back during the entire session, with bolsters under your knees and ankles to provide support for your lower back and legs. An eye pillow will be available for maximum protection from any light. Soft background music may be playing and additional aromatherapy can be used to heighten the mood and help you relax. Your comfort is important so that you may fully enjoy your experience!

The hands and feet are each thoroughly worked on by your therapist, using a variety of manual techniques. You will not feel ticklish: Firm pressure generally eliminates that possibility. No lubricants of any kind are used during the session. Some techniques may be soothing, some may be stimulating. If an area presents a need for additional attention, extra time will be spent addressing that need. Although your feedback is always appreciated, you may be relaxed enough to doze off (or go into a meditative state) - that's great! You will certainly benefit more from this state than if you "fight the feeling".

At the end of the session, your therapist generally applies a soothing oil or lotion balm to your feet. You may feel drowsy, relaxed or energized. Full impact is generally felt within 36 hours, but may continue for several days. At your next session, it is always great to hear the positive effects reflexology has had on your well-being.
