"Health depends on being in harmony with our souls."
---Dr. Edward Bach
As a physician and homeopathic doctor, Dr. Bach spent his life searching for the purest method of healing. He believed that one's mental attitude plays a vital role in maintaining health and recovering quickly from illness. By the time of his death, he had developed a complete system of 38 Flower Essences - prepared from the wild flowers, trees, or bushes on his property - that work by treating the individual, rather than the disease or its symptoms. These essences are used by people in every walk of life, including traditional and complementary health care practitioners.
The purpose of the essences is to support a person's fight against illness, anxiety, trauma, or any emotional factor causing symptoms and distress. They can also be used preventively, at times when undue stress is anticipated, or when feeling unusually fatigued or "out of sorts". Each essence is gentle in action, as homeopathic remedies often are, requiring more patience to see results than chemical formulations (prescription medicine). People of any age can safely take them - newborn to dying. They are also very beneficial for animals and plants.
Each essence addresses a specific mental or emotional state and works especially on the condition of that person. Thus, two people with the same complaint (e.g. anxiety) may benefit from quite different essences - it depends on how each person "views" their condition. The effect of taking the essences is not to suppress negative attitudes, but to transform them into positive ones - thereby stimulating one's potential for healing and freeing the physical system to fully engage in fighting stress and/or illness. The essences restore balance to our minds and bodies - preventing or alleviating symptoms.
Dr. Bach divided the 38 tinctures into 7 groups - fundamental conflicts which prevent us from being true to ourselves:
- Fear
- Uncertainty
- Loneliness
- Despondency or despair
- Over-sensitivity to influences and ideas
- Insufficient interest in present circumstances
- Over-concern for the welfare of others
Each essence covers a specific nature of the difficulty, such as: Fear can take the form of terror, fear of other people, fear of losing one's mind, inexplicable fears or known, definable fears. There is an essence for each type of fear.
The preparation of the mother tinctures has always been conducted at Dr. Bach's home (now The Bach Centre), Mount Vernon in Oxfordshire, England. The purity and integrity of the plants and their locations on the property, as well as the quality of the essences, has been rigorously maintained. Concentrated essences can be kept for up to five years.
The essences are completely natural and safe, have no unwanted side effects and are non-addictive. They will not conflict with any medication. However, they are not meant to be a substitute for medical treatment; consult with your physician should symptoms persist. The concentrated tinctures are preserved in a minuscule amount of brandy, which may not be acceptable to everyone.
To determine which essences you may be needing, there are three choices:
- Have a Bach Flower Consultation. We will review the concerns you might have, symptoms that may be present, and all the essences that may be helpful to you at this time. After narrowing our focus to the most salient essences - we can combine up to 7 if necessary - I will prepare a formulated bottle for you. This bottle will contain spring water and a few drops of each essence we have chosen. Dosage is taken by dropper onto the tongue. Each time a bottle is refilled, we will review your current emotional state to see if any changes are necessary. Most people begin seeing or feeling improvement within three (3) weeks.
- Buy a book on Bach Flower Essences, reading each one to see if you can recognize yourself. This can take time and it may be hard to recognize yourself if the description is not flattering. Asking friends or relatives to help can be troublesome. If you think more than one essence applies, multiple bottles may need to be purchased, which can be costly.
- FOR IMMEDIATE HELP - In the case of highly stressful, very difficult, or startling experiences, Rescue Remedy should be used immediately. This formulation of five (5) essences can be purchased ahead of time at my studio, many holistic markets, and some pharmacies; it can also be used for pet emergencies. Rescue Remedy will help you face any situation in a calmer, stronger frame of mind and help reduce any fear or extreme nervousness, if present. It is available as a concentrated tincture, a pocket/purse-size spray, or pastilles (like mints). Rescue Remedy Cream has an extra essence to soothe burns, abrasions or any trauma to the skin.
Dr. Bach believed that this simple system of healing would be the medicine of the future. As time goes on, more and more people find, use, and benefit from his gentle essences to balance emotions and well-being.
